Why strategic agility in the workplace matters

How agile is your company? Strategic agility in the workplace is staying competitive while identifying and preventing potential shocks and at the same time capitalizing on opportunities.

Agile organizations need agile employees to avoid or minimize shocks with their speed and flexibility.

Stay Agile

“Agility” is more than a buzzword in in the workplace today…it’s a requirement. Each day, we’re called to make progress faster, while pivoting on short notice. To stand firm in our ideas while remaining open to new perspectives.

STEP #1 - Evaluate

Evaluate the areas of potential vulnerability that may require adapting.

STEP #2 - Plan

While change is often unplanned, we can have a plan for how we manage change.

STEP #3 - Equip

Training and tools are available for equipping people to better adapt to change.

Adopting Agility. Loyal Customers.

“Agility” is more than a buzzword in in the workplace today…it’s a requirement. And we all know this – we are living this now. Before the events of 2020, it’s likely that your organization had undergone some kind of transformation to support organizational agility.

Staying agile demands that we develop and use our emotional intelligence (EQ)—a level of sophistication that’s never been demanded before. The more volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous our working environments become, the more critical, a truly agile workforce is to success.

Each day, we’re called to make progress faster, while pivoting on short notice. To stand firm in our ideas while remaining open to new perspectives.

Adopting agility: A person balancing himself between two cliffs.

I can help teach your staff to read the emotional and interpersonal needs of a situation and respond accordingly. They will discover an agile approach to workplace interactions and learn to navigate outside their comfort zone, empowering them to meet the demands of any situation.

But why are we all so eager to become more agile?

Because—well before the events of 2020–the marketplace was and continues to be constantly reshaped by powerful macro forces:

  • sweeping globalization
  • rapidly advancing technology
  • unprecedented workforce diversity
  • relentless competition

And then there are the real human and economic game changers such as the pandemic that we are facing today, utterly beyond our powers to predict… much less control.

Recently, the Insights Team at John Wiley & Sons, Inc. surveyed 2500 business professionals in an effort to get a better handle on the need for agility. What they found is that AGILITY might actually be the key 21st-century competency organizations are striving to develop.

Staying agile: a dog passing through an obstacle course.
Staying agile: a woman juggling five red balls.

Here are a few statistics that came out of that survey:

  • 90% of respondents, from individual contributors to the C suite, said agility is more important to their individual success than it was five years ago
  • 95% of managers, directors, and executives said that agility—the ability to adapt quickly and easily—is more important to their organization’s success now than it was five years ago

Increasingly, it seems, organizations and people—require agility to navigate the work-world.

Organizations can’t be agile without agile workers… agile people… who are resilient, adaptable, and collaborative. People who can not only withstand rapid change they experience each day, but somehow can even embrace it.
