Wow. This is the last segment of the Understanding Your Employees Series for Managers! And let me tell you, this series of five posts is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to understanding how to effectively use Everything DiSC as a tool to lead your team.

If you haven’t been following along, I would encourage you to start with Part 1, Two Principles Every Manager Should Know, as that post sets the foundation for the last four posts of this series.

If you have been keeping up? Well, time to dig into the last personality type of the four basics for Everything DiSC, the C-style!

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE C-STYLE PERSONALITY

Now, as you should recall, there are two questions to ask to help you figure out which of the four basic personality types fits someone the best. If the answers to the two questions are task-oriented and reserved, you are most likely working with a “C” style person.

Here are some adjectives for people who fall on the C quadrant of the DiSC map:

  • Accurate
  • Cautious
  • Inquisitive
  • Logical

An employee who is careful and expects things to be correct at all times can be a challenge for some. As a manager, your goal is to have a beginning, middle and end to projects and goals. But this type of employee can often slow you down because they want to examine everything prior to going live.

It feels like you are answering to your employee instead of the other way around. You understand things need to be as accurate as possible. But you also know that sometimes you just need to get moving.

This type of individual often works best when they are given the opportunity to fact check and do their research. They are usually driven by data and evidence-based information and are not typically up for fun and games as they are so focused on their tasks that need to be completed by a specific time frame. Because of these traits, their coworkers often find them trustworthy, however, they might also come off as arrogant and cold.

TIPS FOR MANAGING THE C-STYLE PERSONALITY

A great manager recognizes that this employee is the quality control individual of the organization. This is the person you go to when you need an honest answer. Someone who you know has the best information because they have done their research providing evidence to back it up.

This person is the competent one of the group. Your team knows it but sometimes forgets. While they like to keep to themselves, they are reliable.

How can you as a manager develop this person who is always right, cautious and is constantly analyzing things?

  • Provide facts and reasons to them.
  • Give them the option to work alone.
  • Don’t make many changes unless you have a legitimate reason.
  • Supply clear directions and anticipate their questions.
  • Let them take it at their own pace; don’t rush them.

These are just a few ways to help you with this cautious yet accurate employee.

I hope that you have enjoyed this series and understand how different your employees can be! Now that you understand the basics of DiSC, I challenge you to start using this tool at work. Let it help you to read people and better understand them.
